The Romanian labour market makes no exception, as just in EU member states there are almost three million Romanian citizens working according to the latest official statistics. Great Britain is the first most popular country for Romanians looking for work abroad. Indeed, Tjobs.ro monthly statistics show a growing interest in British job positions. And the current online survey conducted by Tjobs.ro corroborates its applicants’ desire to work in the United Kingdom.

General Information Concerning the Romanian Labour Market from Tjobs.ro Database

In a „Top 10 Industry Sectors With Job Offers Abroad”, „Medical and Health Personnel” is ranked number one, with 24.93% of the available jobs (that is 5,695 job positions), followed by „Hotels/Travel” (13.35%) and „Agriculture/Sylviculture” (6.78%). (Graphic 1)

On the other hand, a „Top 10 Foreign Countries With Job Offers” reveals that United Kingdom (UK) is the new leader, with a 25.50% part of the total 22,847 work contracts abroad. With its 5,826 available jobs, UK precedes the second runner up, Greece (11.15%, 2,547 job positions, respectively). (Graphic 2)

The interest Tjobs.ro applicants express for the jobs in Great Britain is reiterated in a “Top 10 Foreign Countries Whose Job Offers Romanians Applied For”. In the reporting period 29/09 – 28/10.2010, almost 21.00% of Romanians using Tjobs.ro recruitment system mainly applied for job positions in UK. The discrepancy is visible when comparing with the number of applications for Germany: 10,170 UK job applications against 6,501 German ones. Italy is even further in the area of concern of Tjobs.ro users, with a 7.39% segment. (Graphic 3)

Moreover, 10.26% of Romanians using Tjobs.ro recruiting service employed the term “UK” when searching for a job abroad, in the reporting period 29/09 – 28/10/2010 (Graphic 4). This is almost double the percent of on-site search when compared to the following two most searched countries, Germany (5.87%) and Italy (4.45%). Finally, one can notice that Romanians’ interest in British job adverts was constant all year long, with several picks in certain periods. (Graphic 5).

Romanians’ Interest in the British Labour Market, Tjobs.ro Database
A quarterly study published on www.tjobs.ro regarding the evolution in the number of online applications for working propositions in the UK industry sectors shows that the five most searched and applied for industry sectors are the following, in the given period 01/01 – 28/10/2010:

1. “Hotels/Travel” (16,684 candidatures);

2. “Restaurant” (8,876 candidatures);

3. “Medical and Health Personnel” (8,321 candidatures);

4. “Au Pair/Childcare” (7,082 candidatures);

5. “Agriculture/Sylviculture” (4,410 candidatures). (Graphics 6, 7, 8 & 9, Appendix 1)

Nevertheless, “Medical and Health Personnel” is the one industry sector on Tjobs.ro recruitment system with a steady growth during 2010, whereas “Au Pair/Childcare” and “Medical and Health Personnel” augmented their job propositions for Romania starting with the second quarter of 2010. In contrast, the number of job offers for the industry sectors “Restaurant” and “Agriculture/Sylviculture” was continuosly decreasing this year. And this statistic phenomenon seems normal, as the interest in jobs related to summer is lower in the automn/winter season. The same is to be noticed regarding the respective employers’ activities, which are diminishing as well. (Graphic 10, Appendix 1)

The Online Survey “Do You Want to Work in the United Kingdom?”, Tjobs.ro Database Romanians searching for job offers abroad through www.tjobs.ro could participate in the online survey “Do You Want to Work in the United Kingdom?” in the reporting period 21/10 – 01/11/2010. The main goal of the project was to highlight the interest Romanians willing to work abroad had for the British labour market. The same online poll also wanted to highlight which of the UK industry sectors and job titles present more interest to the Tjobs.ro users.

The survey was divided into two different sets of questions, that is: “Do you want to work in UK?” and “Have you worked in UK before?”
5,639 participants answered to the mentioned survey through an e-mail invitation. 71.00% of the applicants are males. (Graphic 12, Appendix 2) Yet, from an ongoing online survey, addressed to the recruiting agencies using Tjobs.ro recruiting system, preliminary results show that 54.00% of the persons interested in jobs abroad are females. This means that men are more likely to use Internet options for their job searches, while women are more likely to contact personally or through telephone the recruiting agents. Moreover, applicants aged 35-44 (39.00%) and those aged 55 and over (35.00%) are more numerous to take part in the online poll. (Graphic 11, Appendix 2)

Only 1.00% of the participants denies wanting to go to work in UK. (Graphic 13, Appendix 2) The other 99.00% group express their desire to work in UK in a skilled labour position (68.00%), while 29.00% of them search a job demanding higher education. Still, 32.00% of the participants willing to work in Great Britain would accept an unskilled labour proposition. (Graphic 14, Appendix 2)
“Industry” (14.87%), “Construction” (13.80%) and “Hotels/Travel” (13.45%) are the first three choices of Romanians on the British labour market. (Graphic 15, Appendix 2) And “England” is by far the region preferred by the survey’s participants. (Graphic 16, Appendix 2)

The second part of the survey reveals that 7.00% of the participating applicants had already worked in Great Britain before. (Graphic 17, Appendix 2) “Construction” (23.54%), “Agriculture/Sylviculture” (17.47%) and “Industry” (15.74%) are the main industry sectors these participants had worked in. 64.00% occupied positions requiring skilled labour and higher education competences. And 35.35% of them lived in “London” during their working contracts in Great Britain. (Graphics 18, 19 & 20, Appendix 2)
Participants’ real desire in obtaining a job in Great Britain was checked out again, in one final question: “which country would you go to work in as soon as tomorrow?” 70.00% of them chose United Kingdom. (Graphics 21, Appendix 2)
