Bucharest - 18 martie 2013 - In the framework of the CarpathCC (Carpath Climate Change) project the Second workshop will be held on 21 - 23 March 2013 in Sovata, Romania.

The CarpathCC project, supported by the European Commission was launched 2012 in order to assess the impacts of climate change for ecosystems and ecosystem based services and identify possible adaptation measures in the Carpathian Mountains.

The aim of the workshop is to inform local stakeholders about the project, to introduce preliminary results related to impacts, vulnerabilities to climate change in the concerned Romanian and Serbian focal areas, and provide opportunity for them to discuss the findings and select the most feasible adaptation options. Stakeholders and experts invited represent the state, civilian organisations and communities and market players.

The CarpathCC (Carpath Climate Change) project holds great importance for Romania and Serbia as well, as almost 50% of the Carpathian Mountains are located in Romania, hence effects of CC will have significant effect on the country and its economy. In the light of this, out of the total 5 focal areas, 3 Romanian and 1 Serbian focal area are represented in the project, as follows:
• Rodna Maramures (Romania)
• Tarnava Mare (Romania)
• Iron Gates Natural Park(Romania)
• Djerdap National Park (Serbia)

The project consortium consists of 7 partners and lead by the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) with the support of Aquaprofit Consulting, with a valuable contribution of the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) and the Romanian National Institute for Research and Development in Environmental Protection (INCDPM), which directed the research made on 2 romanian focal areas (Rodna Maramures and Tarnava Mare). It also has a lot of experience in which regards research on biodiversity and ecosystems, as a relevant example the project: „Monitoring the environmental impact of the works regarding the improvement of the navigation conditions on the Danube river between Călăraşi and Brăila, km 375 and km 175”,
with noticeable results because of the unique studies on sturgeons at European level.

An international research group of more than 100 experts and scientists has been examining the vulnerability of the surface and underground water, wetlands, forests and grasslands and economic services built on these, for example forest management, tourism and agriculture due to the climate change. Based on the results recommendations to sectorial policy measures will be put together to facilitate adaptation to the climate change.

The workshop in Sovata, 21-23 March 2013 will focus on introducing preliminary results and proposed adaptation measures to the Romanian and Serbian stakeholders and experts. The conference will give an opportunity to discuss these results and give feedback for further consideration.

Expert panel focusing on the above focal areas examine the vulnerability of forests and grasslands to climate change, as well as its long term impacts on tourism, forestry and agriculture.

At the workshop held at the end of March, the following institutions will participate: Environmental Protection Agency Caras-Severin, National Forest Administration Romsilva, WWF – România, Regional Administration of Water SGA Mures, Environmental Protection Agency Mureş, Rodna Mountains National Park Administration, Piatra Craiului National Park Administration, Cheile Bicazului – Hăşmaş National Park Administration, Iron Gates Natural Park Administration, Djerdap National Park Administration, Babes-Bolyai University.
